Did you know…
Paneling is a wall covering constructed from rigid components. It was traditionally made of interlocking wood, but these days it can be made of MDF or other materials.
Paneling was developed to make rooms in stone buildings more comfortable. The panels served to insulate the room from the cold stone. We now use paneling for decorative purposes and some may be extremely ornate.
The term wainscot applied to high quality riven oak boards from medieval Poland and surrounding areas that were exported to parts of western Europe. A “wainscot” therefore was a board of riven oak, and wainscoting was the paneling made from it. Wainscot oak came from large, slow grown trees that were knot free, dimensionally stable and easy to work with. In later times, oak wainscot was replaced with softwoods (such as Pine or Spruce), but the name stuck.
Capital City Millwork offers many options to achieve most paneling or wainscoting designs.
