At Capital City Millwork we carry specific types of flooring depending on the location and subfloor in your home:

Solid Hardwood Flooring: This hardwood flooring can be installed on top of a standard plywood subfloor that is found in most homes in the United States. The flooring is ¾” thick and is nailed or glued to your subfloor. The flooring is available in an unfinished form (finish coats are applied at your location) or prefinished.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring: This ¾” thick hardwood flooring is installed when your home has a concrete subfloor, your room is below grade or if you are installing the hardwood flooring over a radiant floor heating system. Engineered flooring is glued to the concrete. It can be sold either unfinished or prefinished.

Hand Scraped Hardwood Flooring: Both our Solid and Engineered Hardwood Flooring can be hand scraped at our manufacturing facility before it is sold to you. It is scraped and distressed to make a new floor look like a classic old world floor. In order to properly finish this floor, it must be installed and finished by your installation professional at your location.

Difference between unfinished and prefinished hardwood flooring

  • Unfinished hardwood flooring is installed at your location and is sanded and finished onsite. This process usually takes several days. Since an unfinished floor is sanded at your location prior to applying the final finish coats, you will have a smooth floor and will not be able to feel the edges of the individual boards.
  • Prefinished hardwood flooring has the all of the finish coats applied during the manufacturing process. It is installed at your location and is ready to use usually the same day. When you feel the edges of the boards on a prefinished floor, you will be able to feel the edges or bevel in between each piece of wood flooring.

If you have questions about which hardwood flooring type is right for you and your budget we strive to teach you about your options, and diminish the possibility of problems down the road. Contact us today!
